Choosing Landscape Rock by Size
Size drives both the look and the labor. Pebbles and small cobbles spread by hand and work as ground cover or water feature fill. Larger cobbles need a wheelbarrow and read as deliberate placement rather than fill.
Boulders start around a foot in diameter and go up from there, and anything past a few hundred pounds needs equipment on site to set. Tell us the access route to the placement area before you order boulders, because a stone that will not fit down the side yard is an expensive problem.
Dry Creek Beds and Winter Runoff
Scotts Valley runs a Mediterranean pattern, wet winters and dry summers, which is hard on a landscape built for one season and not the other. A dry creek bed handles both. One caution: rock holds heat, so a full-sun bed under stone runs warmer than the same bed under bark, which suits Mediterranean planting and punishes anything that wants a cool root zone. Landscape fabric underneath cuts weed growth considerably.
